Our last show for the 25-26 season at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre was the Musical Man of La Mancha. A show about the telling of Don Quixote while playwright Miguel de Cervantes is imprisoned, our musical takes place in a mine shaft cellar where the actors are on stage for the entirety of the show, telling the story with props and the different levels throughout the set.

This show consisted of a 26-foot-tall half-circle cone wall with a square platform at center, a curved platform system around the base of the wall and stairs leading to a hidden door. On the downstage edge of the wall, there are angled “side walls” that go offstage and have gate doors leading behind the wall. There was also a trap door in the floor of our stage where we removed one of our stage platforms and replaced it with a wooden platform with a door, and built an escape platform and stairs system under the stage. Finally, there is a flying “gate” show curtain that covers the full set and a false proscenium. I was responsible for tech designing the false proscenium, the flying show curtain, the full platform system, the trap system and the side walls.

We had about 6 weeks to build the set, 4 days to load in and one day to load out with a team of 6, including myself and the Technical Director.
